There are thousands of apps out there for pilots and aviation enthusiasts – from games to weather briefings to training resources. It’s impossible to highlight them all so here are 10 apps that are useful for pilots and flight training students.

  1. ForeFlight
    This is an all-in-one pre-flight and in-flight tool complete with VFR flight plan filing, weather briefings, digital sectionals, airport directory, GPS navigation, weather and more. IFR pilots also can access approach charts. Besides these flight tools, there are options for checklist, logbook, weight and balance calculators, and more.  
  2. MyRadar
    This tool provides a clear and current radar image of your location and immediate area. The app also provides current and high and low temperatures; winds; precipitation; cloud coverage and forecasts. You can purchase a pro version that allows you to superimpose weather imagery over sectional charts.
  3. FlightAware
    This app is one of the most popular flight tracking systems. Search by flight number, route, operator, location, aircraft type and more. View takeoff and landing information and live tracking.
  4. SafeLog Pilot Logbook
    One of the most versatile electronic logbooks, SafeLog can be accessed across platforms using a single account.Offering flight logging, currency analysis and reporting features this app is compatible with logbook formats worldwide.
  5. AOPA
    Built by the largest pilot organization, this app lets you access articles, planning tools, flight tracking and the ability to set new goals and celebrate your achievements with the Pilot Passport feature.
  6. FRAT
    Input parameters such as recent flight experience, time of flight, ratings, proficiency, weather, and environment to evaluate risk management of a flight. The app reveals a grade for the flight post-evaluation to help you determine if you should take a flight or not.
  7. GarminPilot
    The name Garmin is pretty much synonymous with navigation. This comprehensive app gives you tools to plan, file and fly including maps, trip planning, charts, traffic, airport info, flight plan creation, WX imagery and more.
  8. LiveATC Air Radio
    Listen in on live communications between air traffic controllers and pilots. Select a specific airport by state. You can also see the current metar for the airport and radar of the surrounding area.
  9. FBO Fuel Prices
    Developed by GlobalAir.com, this must have app gives you current fuel prices from over 3,200 FBO’s nationwide and a radial search up to 100 miles.
  10. Spin-a-Wind
    We already have weather tools on this list, but this app goes beyond to provide pilots with crosswind, headwind, tailwind and other conditions for your destination and surrounding area.
