Nineteen cadets travel to Sterling Flight Training to earn their private pilot license
[Jacksonville, Florida, June 16] –Sterling Flight Training, located on Jacksonville Executive at Craig Airport, will once again host cadets from the Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (AFJROTC) Flight Academy, June 21-August 14. The program returns after being put on hold in 2020 due to Covid-19 concerns. These 19 cadets are part of 200 students selected for scholarships nationwide, allowing them the opportunity to complete their private pilot certificate and earn college credits at a partnering university: in this case Purdue University.
During the rigorous eight-week program the students will do a combination of flight training and ground school, with the goal of each student being awarded their private pilot license at the end of the summer.
To be considered for the program cadets had to maintain a 3.0 GPA, be in good standing in their unit, take an Air Force aviation aptitude test, and receive instructor and school endorsements. Other selection factors included life experiences, aviation experiences and being able to pass the FAA first-class medical certificate.
Upon completion of the program some students will continue onto the Air Force, some to their college of choice and some will return to finish out their high school career. The program aims to address the impending pilot shortage and also grow aviation industry diversity.
